Dawn McCourt

Medium: Decorative Painting

Art interest/development: I enjoy creating images that are not so ‘pattern’ oriented (i.e. the process as used with Tole Painting); attractive, but not ‘rigid’ in realistic detail. As a child, I remember that I coloured the ‘outlines’, then coloured ‘inside’ the lines. I sewed from patterns, with little or no ability to ‘veer’ from the visual pattern. Eventually, creative interest began to bloom as an adult. At first,I followed patterns created by others (e.g. Tole painting, or stitchery patterns); eventually coming to realize that I was a ‘scenery junkie’, constantly marvelling at nature’s bounty, and wondering how those images could be depicted: on fabric, canvas, hard surfaces.

Art background: For many years, I was more ‘stitching’ oriented, but also found that I had an interest in imposing decorative elements to fabric or other surfaces. Eventually, I began taking courses (Tole Painting, Faux Finishing, ‘One Stroke Decorative Painting’, Portraiture), and more recently, courses in Acrylics, Oils, Watercolour, and Drawing, which suggested that I can create my own original pieces.

Influence/ Topics: Visual stimulation. Need to ‘see’ something before I can ‘create’.

Process: Refer to visual reference material, then produce, according to size, time, quantity and intent.

I hope to grow in artistic ability; becoming more fluent in the use of oils, acrylics and watercolours, with some interest in converting appropriate designs to embroidery.

Artistic drive: There are times that the ideas just ‘flow’ continuously; reality reveals that time is a challenge, therefore smaller pieces are more appropriate, in terms of completion goals.

Statement: Considering the fact that I felt that I wasn’t ‘born with a paintbrush in my hand’, I admire the difference between ‘natural’ talent, and ‘learned’ talent. Having a business where I can work on my own creations, display and sell, is an advantage. I also enjoy teaching small groups and sharing the creations of other talented people, with the viewing public. Having my own Gallery/Craftshop offers me the opportunity to ‘participate’ by producing, but also by showcasing the works of many. With this relationship, my own education continues.

I hope to grow in artistic ability; becoming more fluent in the use of oils, acrylics and watercolours, with some interest in converting appropriate designs to embroidery.
